Calories in an egg: boiled, fried and scrambled
October 6, 2026 · 2 min read
One large egg (about 50 g) has 72 calories, with roughly 6 grams of protein and 5 grams of fat. It has almost no carbohydrate. What really changes the number is the fat you add when cooking.
Egg calories by cooking method
| Egg | Calories | Protein |
|---|---|---|
| 1 medium (about 44 g), raw or boiled | about 63 kcal | 5.5 g |
| 1 large (about 50 g), boiled | 72–78 kcal | 6.3 g |
| 1 large, fried in oil | about 90 kcal | 6.3 g |
| 2 eggs scrambled or as an omelet (with 1 tsp butter) | about 180–190 kcal | 12.5 g |
| 1 egg white | about 17 kcal | 3.6 g |
| 1 egg yolk | about 55 kcal | 2.7 g |
These are averages and vary with egg size and how much fat goes in the pan.
What pushes the calories up
Fat. A teaspoon of butter is about 35 calories and a tablespoon of oil about 120. Some of the fat stays in the pan when you fry an egg, but two eggs cooked in plenty of oil can pass 250 calories.
What goes with it. Bacon, cheese and toast bring more calories than the egg itself. Two slices of cheddar are roughly 220 calories and two slices of toast about 140–160 before butter.
Egg whites or whole eggs?
More than half of an egg's protein is in the white, while most of the fat and calories are in the yolk. The yolk also carries most of the nutrients, including vitamins A, D and B12 and choline. If you want to cut calories while keeping protein, adding one or two whites to one whole egg is a balanced approach. There is no need to throw every yolk away.
How many eggs a day?
For healthy adults, one or two eggs a day is generally considered fine. If you have heart disease, diabetes or high cholesterol, talk to your doctor about the amount.
Eggs when losing weight
Eggs give a lot of protein for their calories, which makes them a good choice in a deficit. Two boiled eggs come to about 150 calories and 12–13 grams of protein, a meaningful share of your daily protein target. Boiling, poaching and cooking in a non-stick pan without fat are the lowest-calorie methods.
Counting the whole breakfast
The egg is easy to count. The cheese, toast, butter and whatever else is on the plate are harder. In Cal Crew you take a photo of your breakfast and AI identifies each item and estimates calories and macros. You can check the result and adjust the portion.
